Managing Stress, One Stretch at a Time

Today, interested yoga beginners have a range of venues and classes they can look into. There’s vinyasa, bikram, yin–and then, there’s fat yoga.

A recent article from The New York Times features a studio called Fat Yoga, and other similar studios, that openly invite fuller (despite how they feel about it, I’d rather not use the word “fat”) students to join their classes. At these studios, fuller people are given a free space to practice yoga without any shame, criticism or general unease.

With April being National Stress Awareness Month, yoga may be a nice option for people–no matter what size–to unwind and manage stress. As I continue my own weight-loss journey, I’m becoming more and more interested in adding yoga to my routine (if it’s good enough for Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt, then it must be worth a try, right?). Luckily, my own local yoga studio, Breathe Yoga, has a New-to-Yoga program for beginners that eases newbies into the practice.

Plus, Shape Magazine lists several benefits of practicing yoga, ranging from having a time out from the chaos that consumes our day-to-day lives to increased flexibility.

The efforts of studios like Fat Yoga to reach out to fuller students only strengthens the idea that yoga may be a great way for people of all sizes to enjoy all of the benefits that yoga has to offer. This upcoming Sunday, I’m excited to see for myself!
